The course begins by helping educators understand why it is important to talk about race „to help them understand how differences unfold, what differences there are, and why understanding that really improves their productivity and work actually improves,“ says Glenn Singleton, who created the course. „Diversity training tends not to work in its traditional form (because) we don`t go ahead of the reasons.“ To this end, we have developed courageous conversation™, a process for explicitly understanding and discussing race. Hundreds of thousands of people learned of the Courageous Conversation About Race Protocol ™ from the Pacific Educational Group`s many and dynamic collaborators. These representatives from different professions, regions and life experiences work together to design school programs, facilitate seminars and coach executives to use a courageous conversation ™ in their personal and professional lives. During the reasons process, the course also helps teachers to study their own beliefs in depth and to equip them with tools to talk about them. A number of tools are called four agreements. „You had a lot of teachers saying, you know what? I thought about leaving school. Now I`m actually thinking about not just staying, but doing something more effective,“ Watkins says. „When I started looking at the signatures of many teachers who had taken the course, they made Equity Liaison their signature.

They will then be the interlocutor in their school, the interlocutor of the school`s management and colleagues who ask questions, interviews, experiences and opportunities about what they have learned through the course. It is not easy to talk about race. Whatever your ethnic background, conversations about race feel like they`re loaded with anti-personnel mines that are just waiting to begin. People become defensive. Or scared. No one wants to say the wrong thing. So often, we avoid talking about race.

An important element of the Courageous Conversations protocol is the Four Agreements, rules for participating in these difficult discussions. Even without taking the course, learning these four chords can shed light on what it takes to progress in a race conversation. We believe that systemic racism is the most devastating factor that contributes to ensuring that all human beings, especially blacks and indigenous peoples, are able to reach the highest level. It breaks our communities and undermines the support and food we would otherwise have from them. We cannot hope to eliminate the racist results of our lives if we do not first discuss race and racism in a serious, honest and lasting way. This is the idea behind Courageous Conversations About Race, an online course that teaches participants to talk about race. In February 2018, Broward County included 300 of its educators in the course and the results were significant.
